IT'S CALLED SODA

As you may know, nothing makes me cringe more than the use of the word pop. [Shudder, shudder.] Nancy had mentioned a map similar to this one a while back, but then Erik sent me a better one this week. You can actually see what people living in a particular county call their carbonated beverages.

The good news is that this map has confirmed for years what I have believed to be true -

In general, people outside of California, Arizona, Las Vegas, Hawaii, and the Upper East Coast are incredibly stupid.*

*Sorry, Utah.

  1. Man, Utah is all messed up. Yeah, I heard that a couple years ago how a lot of people just call all soda "coke" I thought that was plain weird.

  2. I grew up in northern California and I have always called it soda-
I won't let Jared say "Pop" either because I don't want my children to use that awful term... For some reason it says something about you...

  3. I'm so glad you posted this map. It would have saved me so much trouble after I moved here to Oklahoma (they totally call it POP here exclusively) from Arizona (where it's always SODA).

  4. Ha Ha, you should say sorry to Washington, too! There are some transplants up here! I grew up in Cali so it is definitely SODA. What is up with those blue and red states?

  6. I'm glad I'm not the only one annoyed by "pop". I am curious what words would have fallen under the "other" category. I can't think of any. Ideas?

  7. I'm really surprised at the pacific northwest results.

COKE gets on my nerves more than POP- although that too is annoying.

  8. That's weird because when I moved to Arizona, all the kids in high-school were calling it Pop. SO ANNOYING. And I moving to Idaho. Great.

  9. My family in California, and my family in Utah frequently have this debate. We are always right though

  10. I grew up in the south and called every carbonated drink "coke". I remember waitressing in high school and customers would order a "coke" and I'd say, "what kind?" and they'd reply "sprite". It seemed so normal. Now I live in CT and have learned to call it "soda". It seems so silly now to have ever called everything "coke". Oh well...when in Rome & all that....

  11. Wow . . . such harsh feelings towards us pop drinkers. I'm not sure just how accurate that map is because I'm pretty sure that the county I'm from in NV and the one just north of it are inaccurate. I've NEVER heard anyone where I'm from call it a "Coke" unless you're originally from the south. Besides, I don't see what the big deal is. Personally I use "soda" and "pop" interchangeably, and I use them together many times as well.

The only term that bugs me is "Coke" because I get confused. When I was asked once when I was in Louisianna if I wanted a coke, I responded, "No, Sprite please."

  14. I whole-heartedly agree with every word you said. And I'm putting this post on my shared list so that everyone can become as well-educated as we are!

  15. Our family lived in Tennessee when I was in high school and my BIGGEST pet peeve was that everyone called soda "coke". What the heck?!? How can Dr. Pepper and Sprite and Pepsi be Coke?!? Hello, people! Coke is a BRAND of soda! Thank goodness I live in California now with all the normal people. :-)

  16. Pop, Soda or whatever you want to call it - DIET COKE IS THE BEST!
I have watched people at Costco here in St. George, UT - the men drink Coke and the ladies drink Diet Coke. I am against Pepsi, because Pepsico uses their money for causes I do not agree with. I know, there is lemonade, sprite, dr. pepper and the list goes on. We are from California moved to St.George and love it. I am glad Diet Coke is all around. seelynne

  17. One more reason I hate California ;). Really, it's just diet pepsi. That's what it's all about.

  18. I think some of the other terms might be "carbonated beverage" or "juicy juice bubbly stuff" or "canned juice" or "milk" (if your from Appalachia)

  19. Tyler -

"or "milk" (if your from Appalachia)"

Please start a blog. You are hilarious.

  20. The map needs to be updated. I used to call it "pop" but as of last October, now I call it "soda". You can call it an improvement to my life! hee hee

  21. I grew up calling these beverages "soft drinks" which I notice is the title of the chart, so it must be the most correct term of them all. Of course butter is not margarine and mayonnaise is never Miracle Whip. I never refer to Tang as orange juice or Cool Whip as whipped cream. Maybe you need to find some more charts and narrow it down to the REALLY stupid counties.

  22. I'm from Las Vegas & call it "pop"...but I blame my dad. He's from a small southern UT town and I swear we got that term from him.
