HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY

It's official. I have a 1 year old and a 2 year old now. It sounds harder than it really is. Charlie started walking everywhere a few days ago. (I may or may not post a video for the grandparents when I have time. We'll see.)

Did you know that Albertsons will give you a free 9" round birthday cake for your child's first birthday? When I ordered it a few weeks ago the bakery lady asked me what I wanted on my second larger cake and I said, "Do I have to get a second larger cake?" She said no. So, take that, Albertsons! I guess not many people have small 1 year old birthday parties these days.

We dressed Charlie up in the traditional Korean 1st Birthday clothing because he is half-Korean. No, really it just gives us something fun to do on his birthday. It's tempting not to post 500 pictures of him in this outfit because he is so cute in it.

He chose the money and the banana. Translation: He's going to be rich and have many children.

The beautiful free cake from Albertsons. We didn't even eat half of it! Oh, how I love free stuff.

  1. Wow, what a cutie he is! Love the outfit! And the cake pic! Not fair...Albertson's doesn't give free cakes out around here anymore. I guess after the word got out they realized their mistake....wish they did though with Emma's b-day just around the corner. I give them the whole 9" round and let them destroy it but maybe since i'm going to have to pay for it this year....

  2. Happy Birthday Charlie! We got the free cake for Ryan's birthday too, I love free things! We got a bigger cake from Costco for everyone else though, (let Ry have fun with his own cake). I love the picture of Charlie with cake all over his face!

  4. Nancee - In Korea (where Erik served his mission) they line up a bunch of random objects on the kid's first birthday. Whatever the child chooses symbolizes his or her "lot" in life. We aren't really sure what we should put on the tray, so we made our own stuff up.

    Money = Rich
    Knife = A warrior
    Pencil = Smart
    Screwdriver = Handy
    Banana = Fruitful

    One of Erik's old native mission companions gave us the outfit.

  5. Love the Korean outfit! Dressing kids up is so much fun, esp when they look so stinkin' cute!

    My Albertson's sucks b/c when I tried that a few yrs ago, they absolutely insisted I buy the 2nd larger cake. Disgusted, I walked out. :(

    PS: Once upon a time, I had a 1 yr old and newborn twins. That was some serious crazyville. Whatever your situation, know that you can do it, girl! ;)

  6. What a fun tradition! Hard to believe it's been a year. Maybe not for you...but for an aunt who lives far away, I can't believe it!

  7. I think if you had put out a REAL screwdriver instead of a plastic toy, you might have gotten a different result. Also, for Luke's birthday didn't you put out a REAL sword instead of a butter knife? Remind me to tell you the story about someone with a Master's Degree in Child Development misinterpreting results for you based on a similar "test." Sure wish I could have been there!

  8. where's the dj? and the banquet hall? and the hundreds of family members that were at Luke's first birthday? Looks like all charlie got was a free cake and some random junk drawer crap presented on a plastic cutting board. Sorry Charlie...

  10. We wished we could have been there, too. When I reminded gramps it was Charlies' birthday, he said, already??? Was it already a year since we drove over to Tehachapi the day he was born and picked up Luke to bring home with us? Amazing how time is passing. I remember when Luke was dressed up in that cute costume on his 1st birthday, too. Charlie looks so happy and cute and we love both those wonderful boys! Love and miss all of you.

  13. So when I asked you what you did for Charlie's birthday on the phone, I didn't realize you posted a blog about it. We don't need to talk about your life when its on your blog right? Charlie is so cute! I wish I would have known about the free cake for jonahs first birthday!

  16. I can't believe Charlie is one! That is crazy. Eli turns 4 on Wednesday and Jim was trying to talk me into going into Albertson's and say he is just a really big 1 year old to get the free cake...I didn't bite. Free stuff is the best, I get it whenever possible.
