CAN YOU SAY OBSESSED?

Luke is obsessed with Elmo. It's bad. I tried to buy him a pair of shoes that did NOT have Elmo on them and he refused to wear them, so I ended up going back to the store and buying a pair of Elmo shoes identical to the ones he already owns, only a size bigger.

Now, you might be thinking, "Hey, it's not like Luke went to the store and bought that stuff himself. It's your fault that he's so obsessed!" That might be partially true, but imagine you're at the store to pick out a winter hat. If it has Elmo on it, you know your toddler will wear it. It's the same price as the other ones, so why not?

The next problem though is that friends, family, and especially grandparents, hear of this Elmo obsession and start buying the kid giant Elmo toys, Elmo bags, Elmo clothes and Elmo books, all of which Luke loves and drags around the house with him everywhere. You see, this picture is only a small sampling of the Elmo stash we have in our house.

It doesn't really bother me, it's not like he's addicted to Barney (the dinosaur, not the store) or McDonalds. That would be unacceptable. I just never thought an 18 month old could be this obsessed about a furry red monster with googly eyes and an orange nose.

  1. Carson loves Sesame Street, but luckily he hasn't hit the obsession mark. I have a friend who's 3-year old daughter started having everyone call her Diego, because she is so obsessed with Dora and Diego. At least he isn't asking that you change his name to Elmo. If it gets to that point, then I would be worried.

  2. My nephew is that way with Thomas the Tank Engine. Okay, well not when it comes to clothes, maybe.

  3. (caitlin)that picture is just too funny! And to think I almost bought Luke a singing Elmo for x-mas. I wonder if Jonah is going to be Elmo obsessed. He gets very excited when i read the Elmo Bath book to him.

  4. We went through an Elmo phase but only with the first kid. The second went through a pretty big Thomas the Tank Engine thing. But really, just any sort of truck/tractor/car. Last winter all of his shirts had vehicles on them. This winter... they are all sports themed... but I can fill this desire of his through a simple trip to Old Navy and he comes off looking much cooler. So we're both happy. But I had to do this because for days and days straight he would only wear his Boston Red Sox jersey and shorts. Then winter came...

  5. Maybe it has to do with the fact that you make him watch HOURS of Sesame Street everyday! J/K Maybe you should be worried about him joining an Elmo gang.

  6. I have some extra Elmo crap if you want some. My first son loved him!! It's cute though to see the kids really like something- even if he is a red, furry, high pitched little monster...

  7. I agree with Valerie, make sure that Luke doesn't join the Elmo Gang.

  8. Hayden did the same thing, but with Thomas the Tank Engine. I love well meaning family that only feeds the obsession.
