POOP JUICE

Mmmm, poop juice looks and sounds so appetizing. Doesn't it?

Luke has consistently been a fantastic sleeper for almost two months now. He goes to bed at 7:30 p.m. and sleeps straight through till 7:30 a.m. the next morning! It is a beautiful thing and I finally feel like I am getting my life, or at least some sanity, back.

Our big problem now is poop juice.
(When I say, "poop juice" I mean, literally, POOP JUICE. ) When he doesn't sleep all night (which is rare, but does happen), he'll wake early in the morning covered in poop juice. Even when he does sleep all night, he is covered in poop juice. This means I am washing sheets almost every single day and changing his pajamas constantly. I also think my fingers smell like perma-poop. It is disgusting.

Last night was really bad because we (Luke and I) are both sick with a cold. He woke up a lot from coughing so much. Around 2 a.m., I deliriously put him in bed with us. At 5 a.m., Erik takes Luke out of bed, puts him in the bathtub and says to me, "Hey, you know you're lying in poop juice, right?" Since I am so tired, I just pull the sheet off, wipe myself down with a towel, and climb back into bed. That afternoon, my Dad sends me an email about avoiding staph infections and the number one thing is, "DON'T SLEEP IN POOP JUICE." Okay, it didn't say poop juice, but I'm sure that sleeping in it is sure to bring on a staph infection. Great.

So, here's my question. Is there any way to avoid the poop juice? A special diaper that will hold it in? Erik is suggesting that we change Luke's diaper every 2 hours during the night, but I don't agree if I am the one doing it. Mostly because I am selfish and I don't want to wake Luke or myself up every 2 hours to change a diaper. There's got to be a better way, right?

  1. WOW! You're so lucky that he sleeps that long! Bella is going through the same thing right now with the poop juice. With the intro to solids she is pooping around the clock. I have really liked the pampers cruisers diapers because they have this dry weave super absorbant stuff on the inside and usually holds everything in. The only problem is that she has lost weight since she is all over the place and the diapers dont fit as well and it leaks out the legs. I change her every few hours too and I'm thinking the only way to keep it in is to duct tape the diaper on. oh yeah, and as far as keeping stuff in, huggies has good design, it has scrunchie elastic at the back and usually keeps the poop in but lacks the absorbancy that pampers has. duct tape really is the answer here. :) Good Luck!

  2. And one more reason not to have kids. I have never heard of people having problems with "poop juice" and I know lots of babies. Yuck! But he's cute, so I guess it's worth it. ;-)

  3. Oh Cristin, I'm so sorry. I like the duct tape idea too. Maybe duct tape a trash bag around the top of his diaper with his legs inside of the bag....totally joking. Ok maybe 60/40...at least that guarantees no poop juice on the bed.

  4. Well, now that I've been throughly disgusted I have to say that the poop issue sounds strange. Does the pediatrician think that's an issue? I've never heard of a kid pooping all night.

  5. I don't think we ever had "poop juice" issues. Firstly, I would sleep him on a towel... would that work or will he just get all twisted up in it? I hate having to change sheets (we have bunkbeds and I'm almost 7 months pregnant... it's a HUGE chore). I've always been most satisfied with Pampers Cruisers. Our current issue is a 3 1/2 year old who won't poop in the potty. So he holds it in all day and then after he falls asleep we smell him as we pass his room. Does he poop in his sleep? Does he poop and then fall asleep? We have no idea. But he's super cooperative to change a diaper on in the middle of the night, lifts his bum up for us, etc. all while staying asleep. But still...
It would be a chore to change Luke every two hours. And would that even work? Is it all at once or continuously throughout the night? Crazy.

  7. oh boy. I sure hope I never see or smell that! I would ask a doctor if it's really that bad. Does he like Bananas? That will plug him up, at least solidify the poor kid. I'd like to hear the follow up on this post? Any cures, reasons why he does it etc.

  8. Have you tried double diapering? I've bought really cheap diapers the next size up and when Carson was going to bed, I would put it over his diaper. I'd say about half the time it helped to catch anything that ran out of the first diaper. Have you mentioned this to his doctor? Carson had an infection last year that made him have really runny poopy diapers all the time.

  9. Have you tried those crib pads so that all you have to change is the pad and not all the sheets? It's thin so it doesn't get all bunched up and holds a lot.

Also, are you using cheap diapers? Be honest - I know you are frugal. I am a firm believer in good diapers. When I use the cheapies I end up using twice as many thus making them more expensive. I LOVE the Huggies natural fit. They are cinched around the legs so the "poop juice" has a harder time getting out. I loved pampers cruisers with Hayden, but for some reason with Owen they leave fuzz all over his penis.

Is he teething? My kids always have runny poo when they're teething. Good luck. I hate poop issues.

  10. The Huggies Supreme diapers are awesome. They have the good fit, plus the extra absorbency. They're more expensive than regular Huggies, but I only use them at night with Gavin. Try 'em!

  11. (Caitlin)I am having the same type of problem with Jonah, Well actually its with pee "juice". You know how he sleeps in bed with us, well I'm starting to think it's not a good idea anymore. Every single morning, the bed is either wet from pee, or wet from spit up. I used to wash the sheets every day, but admittedly I sometimes just throw a towel or blanket on top of the wet part and go back to sleep. Maybe I'm a bad mom because I dont change his diaper every time I hear him start to fuss. I don't blame you Cristin, But thats nasty. I think it might be the diapers your using. They arent holding poop in.

  12. Zach says: Option A: make him sleep in the bath tub. Option B: Wrap him in bubble wrap. Option C: Stick a cork in it.

  13. Huggies Overnights...especially for boys! They hold a lot more. Cut back on how much liquid he gets about an hur before bedtime...cut it in half - he'll adjust.

    Good Luck!

  14. Looks like I need to try Pampers Cruisers or Huggies Natural Fit. I was using some brand of Pampers and Huggies (not those specific types though) and they weren't working at all, so I decided to switch to the less expensive Target brand a few weeks ago, which works just as well as the Pampers or Huggies I was using. But I will try the Natural Fit or Cruisers, and then if that still doesn't work - duct tape.

  15. My son had the same problem and I ordered these and it solved all sorts of messy clean up problems. Here's what you need: go to www.cottonbabies.com and click on diaper covers then order some. The Bummis brand is excellent. There's something to be said about old fashion diapering. I think Babies R Us may carry diaper covers but I'm not sure. By the way, I'm Leslie Ashby's friend, just in case you were wondering who is giving you this wonderful sanity saving advise!!!

  16. Cristin just because you have written gross blogs in the past, doesn't mean you can make them more nasty each time

  17. Dina -

I'm assuming you can use the diaper covers with disposables as well? I'm going to check them out at Babies r Us tomorrow, and will order them from that site if they don't have them. Thanks for the tip!
