I am aware that this confession may alienate all the Harry Potter lovers that read my blog. So, please don't hate me, but I do not like Harry Potter. I have no desire to read the books. I fall asleep during the climax of the movies.
What I do like is being part of a collective mass pop culture experience, like the unveiling of a new Harry Potter book. For this reason, I read the epilogue of the new book on Saturday and some spoilers on the internet so that I would have something to talk about with people, but secretly I'm like, "Oh man, do we have to talk about Harry Potter?" I just hate being out of the loop.
Other big pop culture phenomenas that I can't get into, but feel forced to know something about so that I can have friends:
Lord of the Rings
America's Got Talent
I saw Star Wars for the first time when it was re-released during the late '90's. I was kind of disappointed and actually liked Space Balls better. I saw all 3 Lord of the Rings movies because Erik made me. Most science fiction, including wizards, irritate me. Maybe it is because I had this roommate in college who was addicted to the Science Fiction Network and I felt like a prisoner in my own home while she had the tv on. (Consequently, I do love the Back to the Future movies, Quantum Leap and Somewhere in Time, so science fiction about time travel is really neat to me.)
Either way, please do not hate me for hating Harry and I won't hate you for hating my favorites like the Spice Girls, American Idol and the Office. Although, something must be seriously wrong with you if you don't like those things because they are supercool!!! (Just kidding, sort of!)
